Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Porto

Heavy rainfall since the early hours in northern Portugal has led to numerous incidents in the Porto district, primarily flooding of public roads. The VCI (Via de Cintura Interna) was completely closed for over an hour in the Arrábida-Freixo direction at Bessa Leite, and the AEP tunnel near Norte Shopping is flooded.

Traffic Disruptions and Accidents

After a night of intense rain, the VCI was closed in the Arrábida-Freixo direction, reopening around 8 a.m. Sheets of water are also complicating life for drivers during this morning's commutes.

Access to the Freixo Bridge in Oliveira do Douro, Gaia, is restricted due to an accident.

Emergency Response and Warnings

Recall that the Porto district is under an orange warning until 12 p.m. The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) recorded, until 7 a.m., 68 weather-related incidents, mostly flooding of public roads and structures, primarily in the north of the country.

"We had 68 occurrences, most of which were flooding of public roads and structures in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, without causing victims or serious damage due to the rain," José Costa from ANEPC told Lusa agency.

Of the 68 recorded occurrences, 59 were flooding of public roads and structures, three tree falls, two road clearances, and four mass movements.
