Parts of Fort Stewart, located in the southeast of Georgia, USA, were cordoned off this Wednesday following reports of an "active shooter" on the premises. The incident resulted in five soldiers being shot, according to police sources. The victims were promptly transported to the hospital, and the suspect has been apprehended.
A spokesperson for the Fort Stewart Police Department refrained from providing further details or the cause of the incident, as reported by the Associated Press. The base is home to over 10,000 individuals, including soldiers, their families, and civilian staff.
"The facility was secured at 11:04, and security forces are currently on the scene," local authorities disclosed. Situated approximately 64 km southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is in communication with law enforcement officials, as mentioned in a statement cited by AP.
