National Airports Maintain Growth in August
Portugal's national airports continued their upward trend in August, handling a total of 7.8 million passengers, marking a 5.2% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Key Statistics for August
Data released by the INE on Tuesday, October 14, reveal that in August, 26,300 aircraft landed at national airports for commercial flights, carrying 7.8 million passengers (including embarkations, disembarkations, and direct transits). This represents increases of 4.9% in aircraft landings and 5.2% in passenger movements, respectively.
August sustained the growth patterns observed in previous months, with July already showing a 4.8% rise in aircraft landings and a 5.2% increase in passenger movements.
Passenger Origins and Destinations
Regarding passenger origins, the INE reports that in August, 80.6% of disembarked passengers were from international traffic, totaling 3.1 million passengers and growing by 4.8% year-on-year.
- The majority of disembarked passengers came from Europe, accounting for 65.8% of the total and showing a 4.4% growth compared to August 2024.
- The Americas were the second-largest source, representing 9.7% of disembarked passengers with an 8.7% increase from the same period last year.
For embarked passengers in August, 81.5% were international travelers, amounting to 3.3 million passengers and rising by 5.5% compared to August 2024.
- 67.5% of embarked passengers were headed to airports in Europe, indicating a 5.4% growth.
- Airports in the Americas were the second most common destination, making up 9.5% of the total and experiencing a 5.9% increase.
Historical Trends and Daily Averages
The INE highlights that since the start of 2025, monthly records for passenger movements at national airports have been set, except for February. In terms of arrivals, August 2025 saw an average daily disembarkation of 122,400 passengers, surpassing the 116,500 recorded in August 2024 and reflecting a 5.0% growth.
Year-to-Date Highlights Since January
From January onwards, passenger movements at national airports increased by 4.9%, nearing 50 million passengers with a total of 49.846 million handled.
Airport-Specific Performance
- Lisbon Airport stood out, handling 48.4% of total passengers (equivalent to 24.1 million passengers) and growing by 3.1% compared to the same period in 2024.
- Faro Airport recorded a 6.8% growth in passenger movements, totaling 7.3 million passengers and representing 14.6% of the total.
- Porto Airport accounted for 22.7% of total passenger movements, with 11.3 million passengers and a 5.5% increase.
Top Countries for Passenger Traffic
The United Kingdom was the primary country of origin and destination for flights from January to August, with 2.7% growth in disembarked passengers and 2.5% growth in embarked passengers compared to 2024.
However, France saw declines in disembarked passengers (-1.6%) and embarked passengers (-1.3%), ranking second in passenger origin and destination, followed by Spain, Germany, and Italy.
