Inspections to Guarantee Public Access to All Algarve Beaches Starting Next Week
Starting next week, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the National Maritime Authority will conduct inspections across Algarve's beaches. These measures aim to ensure that public access is not being restricted by tourist developments or private landowners.
Key Focus of the Inspections
The inspections, announced by the Minister of Environment and Energy, will verify compliance with laws ensuring public access to beaches. Similar actions have already taken place in Grândola, targeting areas like Troia, Comporta, and Melides.
August Inspections and September Results
Maria da Graça Carvalho revealed that these inspections will occur throughout August, with results expected by early September. The APA will also assess the public services provided by beach concessionaires, including safety measures, first aid, and the availability of clean restrooms and changing facilities.
Major Coastal Intervention Announced
In addition to the inspections, a significant coastal intervention is planned for Quarteira's Forte Novo Beach. A €14.3 million project will replenish sand along a 6.5-kilometer stretch, addressing severe erosion. The project, set to begin post-summer, also includes modifications to the existing groynes.
Ensuring Beach Accessibility and Services
The minister emphasized the importance of not only maintaining access but also ensuring that concessionaires fulfill their public service obligations. This includes providing essential amenities and maintaining cleanliness and safety standards.
