Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon and candidate for re-election, asserts that any shack built in the municipality is immediately demolished, adhering to "the principle of the law" and "a matter of public health".
"We cannot have a city with shacks in 2025. If anyone knows of a case, they should contact [the Lisbon City Council], and a team will be there tomorrow to remove it," stated Moedas in an interview with SIC Notícias.
When questioned about the demolitions carried out by the Loures City Council in the Talude neighborhood—currently suspended by court order—Moedas defended Ricardo Leão's actions, stating he is "doing what the law mandates".
Moedas also claimed that "Ricardo Leão is being politically exploited" by "far-left parties" that "do not want to solve the problems". He criticized, "Many of those crying over what's being done have never done anything, never built. Political parties had this responsibility and did not fulfill it."
Last week, in a CNN interview, Rui Moreira criticized the Central State's inaction on housing and lamented that "mayors are the punching bags of complicated situations". Moreira argued that some are trying to paint Ricardo Leão as "a devil", when "he is taking on responsibilities that belong to the State".
Isaltino Morais, from the Oeiras City Council, also "argues that it is the State's duty to solve the problems of poor families, the needy, and the lower middle class" and assures that, in his municipality, the council also demolishes any shacks that appear.
