Mário Centeno, whose term officially ended on July 20, will not be reappointed as the Governor of Banco de Portugal. This revelation comes from the television channel NOW, citing government sources. Despite Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's recent praise for Centeno's profile during an event in Madeira, the decision has been made not to extend his tenure for another five years.
During the Chão da Lagoa festival, Montenegro hinted at the possibility of reappointing Centeno, stating, "What I can say is that this government, like all previous ones, will make its decision." When pressed about the qualities of the next governor, Montenegro acknowledged that "Mário Centeno meets all the requirements to be governor, that's not in question," but also noted that "the option the government will take is a legitimate choice of any government."
In an interview with Antena 1's 'Política com Assinatura' program, the Prime Minister admitted to having already made his choice, though he refrained from disclosing any names. "I already know what the decision is, but I won't anticipate it," he said.
André Ventura, leader of the Chega party, also weighed in, criticizing any potential reappointment of Centeno as "a mistake" and urging Montenegro to appoint someone "independent" and "above party politics." Ventura emphasized the need for a candidate with quality and independence, distancing the party from any interest in naming positions.
