Loures Mayor Ricardo Leão has described the Talude Militar neighborhood as a "particular case," stating that residents remain there "by choice" following recent demolitions. His comments were made at the "Grande Lisboa Summit" in Paço de Arcos, organized by SIC Notícias.
Leão emphasized the need to address clusters of precarious and illegal construction, which continue to grow. He confirmed that the municipality is contesting a court decision that granted an injunction to 14 Talude Militar residents, halting further demolitions after 55 homes were destroyed.
When asked about the future of the remaining residents, who are now living in tents among rubble, Leão remarked, "People are there because they want to be." He also highlighted the broader challenges faced by Loures, including a housing shortage and lack of public housing, issues common across the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
The "Grande Lisboa Summit" brought together mayors from Almada, Lisbon, Loures, Oeiras, and Sintra, along with Cascais' vice-mayor, to discuss pressing issues like housing, security, and transportation.
