During the summer months, the inland areas of the Algarve remain less visited than the coastal zones, typically favored by tourists for their proximity to the sea. However, the region's interior offers well-equipped bathing alternatives, such as river beaches with excellent swimming conditions, where the water temperature is warm.
These bathing areas, set in natural environments, allow for aquatic activities in peaceful settings, far from the hustle and bustle of the maritime beaches, offering a different experience to those looking to enjoy nature and the Algarve's summer heat.
Alcoutim: A Riverside Village with a River Beach
Located on the banks of the Guadiana River, the village of Alcoutim stands out for its bathing offerings. About 500 meters from the center, on the left bank of the Cadavais Stream, lies the Pego Fundo River Beach, a bathing area equipped with surveillance, support facilities, and a small sandy area.
River Beach with 30-Degree Water
The Pego Fundo River Beach is equipped with surveillance during the bathing season, support facilities, and a small sandy area, making it a sought-after spot by both residents and visitors.
According to information released by the Alcoutim Municipal Council to NiT: "The water is calm and almost feels like a jacuzzi — temperatures exceed 30 degrees in the summer, the municipality guarantees."
The space is certified with the "Accessible Beach – Beach for All" seal, awarded by the National Institute for Rehabilitation, ensuring suitable conditions for people with reduced mobility.
Journey to Alcoutim by Land or River
The village of Alcoutim can be visited by road, but there is also the option to travel by river. According to the Civitatis platform, excursions depart from the marina of Vila Real de Santo António heading to the riverside village. These excursions take place along the Guadiana River and offer a distinct perspective of the Lower Guadiana landscape.
The tour lasts approximately seven hours and includes, besides river transport, lunch at a traditional restaurant in Alcoutim. The price usually hovers around 63 euros per person, although it may vary depending on the operator and the season, and bookings can be made through platforms like Civitatis.
This transport alternative allows visitors to reach the village comfortably while enjoying the natural surroundings of the river and its banks.
Visit to Historical and Cultural Heritage
In addition to leisure options by the water, Alcoutim also boasts significant historical heritage. One of the recommended sites to visit is the village's castle, built in the 14th century during the reign of D. Dinis.
According to municipal information, the castle served as a defensive structure near the border and allowed control over trade conducted via the Guadiana River. Its location also provides a privileged view over the river and the neighboring town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana, in Spain.
Inside the fortification operates the Alcoutim Archaeological Museum, where archaeological artifacts representing different periods of the municipality's history are displayed.
Alternative Destination with Multiple Attractions
The combination of natural heritage, history, and culture makes Alcoutim a potential complete destination for those seeking alternatives to the mass tourism typical of the Algarve coast.
The possibility of enjoying a river beach with good conditions, coupled with cultural offerings and the tranquility of the riverside landscape, makes the village a possible option for short getaways or longer visits during the summer months.
