Pope Leo XIV has officially accepted the resignation of the Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal, Ivo Scapolo, as announced by the Vatican this Friday.
According to the Holy See's bulletin, the resignation was submitted by Monsignor Ivo Scapolo, the Titular Archbishop of Tagaste, due to reaching the age limit.
The Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) expressed gratitude for Scapolo's diplomatic efforts in Portugal since August 2019, highlighting his work with the Church in Portugal and in diplomatic relations with the Portuguese State. The bishops particularly noted his significant role during Pope Francis's visit to Portugal for the World Youth Day Lisbon 2023.
Ivo Scapolo, born in Padua 71 years ago, has been a part of the Holy See's diplomatic service since May 1984. His career includes postings in Angola, Portugal, and the United States of America, and prior to his appointment in Portugal, he served as nuncio in Bolivia, Rwanda, and Chile.
The Vatican has yet to announce his successor.
