How can theater be rethought in the light of algorithms? How can space be created for the human within digital technological structures? These are the two questions Jorge Jácome pondered upon receiving an invitation from Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and its innovation partner, the technology consulting firm NTT DATA, to create a new piece. The film, Cosmic Sans, is now showing from July 9 to 27 in the lounge of Teatro Variedades, with free admission.
Jácome describes Cosmic Sans as "a dialogue, or perhaps a tension, between two worlds: one, linked to the digital, thinking about productivity, innovation, and the future; the other, rooted in the ancestral memory of gesture, the present body, the spoken word." The title plays on words with one of the fonts launched by Microsoft and also includes "the idea of being 'without cosmos' – displaced, without orientation, adrift."
Audição, by Teatro Praga
July 11 to 20 Sala Estúdio Valentim de Barros, Jardins do Bombarda Celebrating 30 years of Teatro Praga, Audição premieres on Friday, July 11. Jácome praises the company as "the most stimulating theater company in Portugal – irreverent, intelligent, capable of laughing at everything (including themselves) while reinventing the stage as a critical and sensory space."
Ou.kupa
Until July 13 Teatro do Bairro Alto and Casa Independente Curated by Piny, this festival celebrates urban dance cultures – from street to clubbing and ballroom. Jácome highlights this second edition as "a festival-celebration that expands the understanding of the party and what it means to dance in community."
Pizza Space-Time, by João Marçal
Until September 6 Galeria Zé dos Bois Jácome commends João Marçal's exhibition at ZDB, curated by Natxo Checa, for its ability to create paintings that "open windows to other dimensions."
A Campa de Marx, by Isadora Neves Marques
Não Edições Jácome's final recommendation is Isadora Neves Marques' new poetry book, which reflects on complex themes like desire, sex, interpersonal relationships, time, and loss.
