The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for the districts of Évora, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre due to the scorching heat, effective from Sunday at 23:57 until Tuesday at 21:00. Additionally, Bragança, Guarda, and Vila Real are under the same warning starting today at 12:00 until Tuesday at 21:00.
Temperatures to Reach 39°C
In mainland Portugal, temperatures are expected to peak at 39°C in Santarém and Braga, with other regions like Leiria and Coimbra reaching 37°C, and Vila Real and Castelo Branco hitting 36°C. The heatwave is prompting concerns over maximum fire danger in over 30 municipalities across Faro, Portalegre, Santarém, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, and Guarda.
Fire Danger Remains High
The risk of wildfires is set to stay elevated in several districts at least until Wednesday. The IPMA forecasts generally clear skies with occasional cloudiness inland, possibly leading to showers and thunderstorms, alongside a temperature rise, except in the South where a slight decrease is expected.
Health Recommendations
In light of the weather forecast, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) advises the public to:
- Drink water regularly
- Wear loose and cool clothing
- Apply sunscreen every two hours
Special caution is urged for the elderly, children, and chronic patients, who should stay in cooler, shaded environments. The DGS also recommends avoiding sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00.
