Political Crisis in Sintra
The Liberal Initiative (IL) has officially withdrawn political confidence from councilor Eunice Baeta, who was elected to the Sintra City Council through a coalition involving the PSD, IL, and PAN parties. This decisive action was taken after Baeta agreed to join the municipal executive alongside two councilors from the Chega party.
Party Leadership's Stance
The president of IL stated that Baeta's decision to participate in the governing body with Chega representatives violates a clear directive from the party's executive commission. As a result, Baeta has not only lost the party's political backing but has also been removed from her position on IL's executive commission, a role from which she resigned at the request of the party president.
Local Party Division
In a contrasting move, the Sintra branch of IL has expressed strong support for Eunice Baeta, defending her actions and accusing the national executive commission of acting in bad faith and demonstrating political inconsistency. This internal conflict highlights deepening divisions within the party regarding its strategic alliances and governance approach at the local level.
