A New Era for Comedy in Lisbon
Laughter broke through Lisbon's typical August calm as the Worten Mock Fest kicked off, promising over five hours of daily comedy with stand-up shows, live podcasts, discussions, and even a humor film cycle. Held at the historic Cinema São Jorge, this three-day event features both national and international comedians, including stars like Rafi Bastos, Daniel Sloss, and Ricardo Araújo Pereira.
Organized by the Kilt agency, founded by Ricardo Soares, the festival is seen as a milestone in Portugal's comedy scene. Soares notes, "This is a sign of the sector's evolution," with ticket sales nearing a sell-out and exceeding expectations. Despite the timing in late August, when many locals are away, the event drew large crowds, filling the surrounding Avenida da Liberdade area.
Support from the City and Beyond
Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas, joined the festivities, dubbing it a potential "web summit of humor." He emphasized humor's role in democracy, stating, "Laughing at ourselves is crucial," and announced a municipal funding of €30,000, though the total cost is estimated between €300,000 and €400,000. Soares admits this first edition may not turn a profit but views it as a valuable investment for the future.
Moedas expressed hopes for the festival to become Europe's largest humor event, highlighting sponsors like Worten. In a light-hearted moment, he even introduced a local political candidate, adding a touch of campaign flair to the proceedings.
Looking Ahead: Annual Plans and Adjustments
Due to its success, organizers are already planning for an annual return, though likely not in August. Ricardo Soares shared, "We're working on making this a yearly tradition," acknowledging the challenges of the timing but celebrating the strong turnout. The free outdoor programming attracted passersby, but most attendees were there for the indoor sessions, showcasing a vibrant and engaged audience.
This festival not only entertains but also signals a growing appreciation for comedy in Portugal, with potential to put Lisbon on the map as a hub for humor.
