A startling discovery was made aboard the MSC 'Virtuosa', a luxury cruise ship docked at Lisbon's Santa Apolónia cruise terminal. The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) seized one kilogram of cocaine hidden in a bathroom, marking a significant bust in the heart of Portugal's capital.
How It Unfolded
The Polícia Marítima (Maritime Police) were alerted by the ship's command after crew members found a suspicious white powder package during routine checks. Initial tests confirmed the substance as cocaine, prompting an immediate handover to the PJ for further investigation.
The MSC 'Virtuosa', which had departed from Brest, France, and was en route to Vigo, Spain, carried 1,675 passengers and crew at the time of the incident. Authorities have yet to identify or detain any suspects linked to the drug seizure.
Investigation Underway
With the Ministério Público (Public Prosecutor's Office) overseeing the case, the PJ is now delving deeper into how such a substantial quantity of narcotics made its way onto the vessel. This incident raises questions about security measures on luxury cruise ships and the challenges of policing international waters.
Despite the seizure, the ship's journey continued as planned, with no disruptions reported to its schedule.
