In a major operation, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) and the Portuguese Navy intercepted a semi-submersible vessel carrying over 1.7 tons of cocaine. This vessel, used by a transnational criminal organization, was stopped in the Atlantic Ocean and was en route to the Iberian Peninsula, with the narcotics intended for distribution across several European countries.
Operation El Dorado
The operation, codenamed "El Dorado", involved collaboration with the Portuguese Air Force and multiple international agencies, including those from the United Kingdom and the United States. Four crew members aboard the semi-submersible were arrested during the interception.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is being led by the PJ's National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking and continues in cooperation with authorities from other nations to dismantle the criminal network involved.
