Portugal has activated a bilateral cooperation mechanism with Morocco to combat the ongoing wildfires, after facing technical failures with its own Canadair planes. The Moroccan government has agreed to provide two aircraft, which will be operational from the Monte Real Air Base.
Initially, Portugal sought assistance from Spain, but the worsening wildfire situation there made it impossible. The Portuguese planes are under repair and expected to rejoin the national firefighting efforts by the end of the week.
This move highlights the urgent need for international cooperation in tackling natural disasters, especially as wildfires continue to pose a significant threat across the Iberian Peninsula.
