Portugal is currently facing a severe wildfire crisis, with thousands of firefighters deployed to combat three major fires across the country. The situation has escalated due to soaring temperatures and strong winds, putting several villages at risk.
Freches Fire: A Critical Situation
More than 650 firefighters, along with 226 vehicles and six helicopters, are battling a fierce blaze in the village of Freches, Trancoso district. The fire has threatened residents from at least four nearby villages, including Palhais, Reboleiro, Aldeia Nova, and Aldeia Velha. Reports indicate that 17 people, including six firefighters, have been injured.
Sobral de São Miguel: Progress Amidst Challenges
Nearly 400 firefighters are tackling another wildfire in Sobral de São Miguel, Covilhã municipality, which began on Sunday afternoon. Authorities report that the situation is "evolving favourably," though three fronts remain active. Covilhã's mayor, Vítor Pereira, expressed hope that the fire could be under control by Monday morning.
Távora and Pereiro: Ongoing Efforts
A third fire in the villages of Távora and Pereiro has mobilized at least 86 firefighters. The combined efforts highlight the relentless challenge Portugal faces this summer.
Heatwave Fuels Fire Crisis
Portugal has been on high alert as temperatures continue to rise, with 12 districts under an orange warning for extreme heat. The National Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) revealed that wildfires have burned 10,768 hectares by mid-July, triple the area compared to last year. Since 2017, fires in Portugal have become increasingly aggressive, posing a growing threat to rural areas.
