Health Alert in Lisbon
The Group of Treatment Activists (GAT) has identified a new outbreak of Mpox in the Lisbon region, alongside emerging cases of hepatitis A. The organization is urgently calling for vaccination against Mpox and the free and equitable distribution of the hepatitis A vaccine.
Community-Based Detection
According to GAT, their community-based screening centers diagnosed new cases of Mpox in October and this month among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Greater Lisbon area.
Simultaneous Hepatitis A Concerns
"Simultaneously, new cases of hepatitis A are beginning to appear among MSM, with the potential to evolve into an outbreak," GAT warned in a statement.
Background on Mpox
First recorded in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mpox spreads through close contact with infected individuals, including sexual transmission. Symptoms notably include skin and mucosal lesions, including in the genital area.
