Portugal is currently facing a devastating wildfire crisis, described by Prime Minister LuĂs Montenegro as both "a scourge" and "a tragedy". The situation, exacerbated by meteorological conditions, negligence, and criminal acts, has prompted a national alert since August 2.

Montenegro emphasized the government's maximum effort to ensure no one is left unaided, highlighting the dual priority of safeguarding lives and the nation's natural and personal heritage. Despite the discreet nature of governmental monitoring, the PM assured a close and effective follow-up on developments.

The Prime Minister deferred any comprehensive evaluation of the crisis management, stating, "We are in the midst of war; it's not during war that we conduct such discussions." This stance underscores the immediacy and severity of the ongoing battle against wildfires.

Wildfire Crisis

On justice reforms, Montenegro advocated for an "acceleration regime" for serious crimes, especially those involving enhanced evidence collection like arson. This approach aims for quicker, more deterrent legal processes.

Budgetary optimism was another highlight, with Montenegro confident in achieving a public accounts surplus by year-end, citing IRS reductions and increased elderly support as contributing factors.

Immigration and constitutional scrutiny also featured prominently, with the PM critiquing political judgments on legal matters and advocating for regulated, humane migration policies.

Significant announcements included the Algarve Central Hospital project, set to commence by early October under a public-private partnership, and the anticipated return of Formula 1 to the Algarve next year.
