Minister's Concerns Over Media Concentration
Pedro Duarte, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, expressed concerns on Monday about the excessive concentration of media and the audiovisual industry in Lisbon. This statement came after his visit to the Northern Production Center of RTP in Gaia.
Focus on Regional Press
Duarte emphasized that the government is investing significantly in regional and local press as part of the Action Plan for Media presented earlier in October. He noted that the Northern Production Center accounts for 40% of RTP's informative television programming, underscoring its role in representing all Portuguese citizens, regardless of their location.
Addressing Concerns from RTP Workers
In response to concerns raised by the Northern Workers' Subcommittee regarding the end of advertising on the public station, Duarte acknowledged these issues, stating, "We need to listen to everyone and understand their fears, uncertainties, and doubts. We are available to clarify." He plans to meet with the Subcommittee to discuss these matters further.
Constructive Goals for RTP
Regarding the proposal to cut advertising on RTP1, Duarte clarified that the goal is to strengthen the station's relevance rather than diminish it. He recognized various interpretations of this proposal, some legitimate and others politically motivated. The minister assured that the aim is not to cut investments but to significantly increase funding for RTP.
Future Investments
Duarte highlighted a capital increase of over 14 million euros from the government and a 40 million euro bank loan intended to support various investments, including those at the Northern Production Center and in Lisbon. He stressed the need for RTP to adapt to the evolving media landscape to better meet the public's needs today.
