Portugal has recently unveiled the €20 Green Rail Pass, a monthly ticket aimed at making rail travel more affordable. This pass allows passengers to access nearly all urban, regional, and inter-regional trains operated by Portuguese Railways (CP), as well as inter-city networks, at a significantly reduced fare.
However, this initiative has not been without its critics. Portuguese unions and some rail groups have raised concerns that the introduction of this low-cost ticket could lead to more complications rather than benefits. They argue that while the intention is to promote public transport use and sustainability, the reduced fare may disrupt existing services and financial stability within the rail sector.
