Major Earthquake Hits Japan's Northern Coast
A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Japan on Sunday, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, as reported by AP. The seismic event occurred at 5:03 PM local time (8:03 AM Lisbon time) off the coast of Iwate province, at a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea surface.
Tsunami Alert Activated
A tsunami warning has been issued for waves of up to one meter along the northern coastal region of the country. Japanese broadcaster NHK has warned people to stay away from coastal areas due to tsunami danger and cautioned that additional tremors could occur.
Immediate Impact Assessment
Initial reports indicate no casualties or injuries have been recorded, and no abnormalities were detected at the two nuclear power plants located in the Iwate area.
Confirmed Tsunami and Infrastructure Disruptions
A tsunami of approximately 10 centimeters was detected in the city of Ofunato in Iwate province and at Ominato port, according to NHK. Bullet trains in the area experienced delays according to railway operator JR East, and some areas suffered power outages.
