  • The rejection includes seven proposals aimed at changing the IVG law.

  • Hugo Soares defends the vote as necessary to maintain the current legal framework.

  • Proposed changes include extending the legal abortion period and removing mandatory reflection.

  • Upcoming parliamentary discussions will shape the future of abortion rights in Portugal.

PSD's Firm Stance on Abortion Legislation

In recent developments, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has firmly committed to voting against all proposals regarding abortion laws in Portugal. This decision aligns with their pre-election promise made during the last legislative campaign, where they pledged not to alter the current law on voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) during this legislative term.

Key Vote Details

On Friday, PSD deputies will vote against seven legislative proposals aimed at amending the existing abortion regime, which includes extending the legal limit for abortions and eliminating the mandatory reflection period. With the right and left factions' voting geometry, it is anticipated that all proposed changes will be rejected.

Leadership's Justification

Hugo Soares, the leader of the PSD parliamentary group, justified this stance by stating that the proposed changes are merely adjustments to the existing framework rather than a fundamental shift in the non-criminalization of abortion established by the 2007 referendum. He emphasized that the essence of the law remains intact, asserting that the matter of IVG is already fully integrated into the national legal framework.

Political Reactions

Luís Montenegro, the PSD's leader, reaffirmed during last year’s electoral campaign that there would be no intervention in abortion laws in the upcoming legislative period, dismissing any claims to the contrary. This statement was crucial in distancing the party from controversial remarks made by other members regarding a potential new referendum on abortion rights.

Proposed Changes and Upcoming Discussion

The upcoming parliamentary session will address several proposals, including extending the legal abortion period from 10 to 12 weeks or even 14 weeks in specific cases. The Left Bloc and Livre parties are also advocating for the removal of the mandatory reflection period and ensuring that abortion services are available in all hospitals nationwide.

This vote represents a significant moment in Portuguese politics, reflecting the ongoing debate surrounding women's rights and healthcare access in the country.
