Rediscovering Centuries-Old Paths
In Santa Bárbara de Nexe, Faro, over one hundred rural paths have recently been classified, marking the beginning of the only officially recognized trails in the municipality. This initiative has now evolved into an exciting hiking festival that celebrates these trails.
The term "centenary path" is used because even the oldest locals struggle to recall ever traversing these routes. Once forgotten, these paths have been reclaimed by nature, leaving behind little evidence of their existence. Sérgio Martins, the president of the local parish council, reminisces, "It was dense undergrowth," highlighting the transformation these paths have undergone.
This project not only aims to revitalize local heritage but also to promote outdoor activities and boost tourism in the region. The hiking festival is set to attract nature enthusiasts and those looking to explore Portugal’s scenic landscapes.
