Weather Warning Issued for Northern and Central Portugal
A cold frontal system is expected to sweep across mainland Portugal, bringing persistent and sometimes heavy rainfall to northern and central regions on Friday and Saturday. According to meteorologist Patrícia Gomes from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this active weather system will result in significant precipitation.
Rainfall Timeline and Impact
- Rainfall will begin late Thursday in the Minho and Douro Litoral regions.
- Throughout Friday, the cold front will slowly cross the continental territory, becoming nearly stationary in the central region, leading to prolonged and intense rainfall in the same areas.
- By late Friday afternoon, rain is expected to affect areas between Setúbal and Portalegre, remaining there for some time.
- On Saturday, November 1st, the system will move into the southern region, though rain will continue in the north and center with reduced intensity.
Official Warnings and Safety Concerns
The IPMA has issued an orange warning for the north and center from 3:00 AM Friday to midnight Saturday, and a yellow warning for Lisbon, Santarém, and Castelo Branco districts from 3:00 AM Friday to 6:00 AM Saturday. Patrícia Gomes emphasized that this situation poses some danger, particularly due to the stationary nature of the front in certain regions.
Temperature Forecast
- Maximum temperatures: 15-20°C in the north and center, 20-23°C in the south, with a slight drop on Sunday.
- Minimum temperatures: Will see a more significant decrease, dropping to 10-15°C in the north and center, and below 5°C in parts of the interior north and center on Saturday night into Sunday. In the south, minimums will range from 13-18°C, falling to 9-14°C during the same period.
Post-Storm Outlook
After this weather event, an anticyclonic ridge is expected to intensify, leading to improved conditions with decreased cloud cover, lighter winds, and no precipitation for at least two to three days. However, the situation may change by mid-next week.
Recent Weather Impact
Recent heavy rain has already caused flooding in various parts of the country, particularly in the Algarve, where water invaded university classrooms in Faro.
