Rui Malheiro's Ambitious Bid for Leadership

Rui Malheiro has been elected as the leader of the Movimento Unidos pelo Liberalismo and is poised to challenge Rui Rocha for the leadership of the Iniciativa Liberal. This announcement comes just a day after Rocha revealed his intention to seek re-election in the upcoming internal party elections scheduled for February next year.

Following Tiago Mayan Gonçalves's withdrawal from the leadership race over a signature falsification scandal, the Movimento Unidos pelo Liberalismo initiated the process to select a new leader. Malheiro, who previously served as the spokesperson, won with an impressive 88% of the votes, reflecting strong confidence from the members in his vision and leadership capabilities during this critical time for liberalism in Portugal.

A Vision for the Future

As a National Advisor for the party since 2020, Malheiro is set to face off against Rocha, who confirmed his candidacy earlier this week. The internal elections will take place during the National Convention of the Iniciativa Liberal on February 1-2 next year.

Malheiro's candidacy is characterized by a desire to elevate the principles of the Movimento Unidos pelo Liberalismo, aiming to promote a renewed and ambitious vision for the party. If successful, he plans to strengthen the foundations of liberalism by emphasizing individual freedom, entrepreneurship, and equality of opportunity, preparing the Iniciativa Liberal to tackle future challenges.

Malheiro will officially launch his candidacy on Saturday, December 14.
