A collision between a goods truck and a school bus carrying 37 children on the A8 highway in Alfeizerão, Alcobaça municipality, resulted in seven minor injuries this Friday - six children and one teacher.
A bus transporting students from São Teotónio College in Coimbra veered off the road and overturned into a ravine on the A8 after hitting a goods truck. The bus was carrying 41 occupants, all from a Coimbra school, including 37 children aged between 9 and 10, and four adults.
The accident, at kilometer 94 of the A8, north-south direction, caused seven minor injuries: six children and a 51-year-old teacher.
68 operational personnel were mobilized to the scene, supported by 32 vehicles. Authorities believe that all vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts, considering the outcome.
The seven lightly injured were taken to hospitals in Torres Vedras and Leiria, presenting only minor abrasions, according to the commander of the São Martinho do Porto volunteer firefighters. The remaining 32 children and two adults were transported to the São Martinho do Porto fire station for further evaluation by INEM teams.
Two of the three lanes on the A8 were closed for several hours, partly because debris filled part of the road.
The causes of the accident are still unknown.
