Former PSD leader Rui Rio has been announced as the national campaign manager for Henrique Gouveia e Melo's presidential run. The revelation came during a candidacy presentation dinner at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Center, where Rio made a grand entrance to applause.
In a compelling speech, Rio outlined his support for Gouveia e Melo, emphasizing the need for a president with "dimension and a sense of State," who is "free, impartial, and independent." He praised the candidate's vision, capability, and determination to serve Portugal, highlighting qualities like sobriety, courage, and straightforwardness as essential for the presidency.
Rio's endorsement included subtle critiques of current President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, advocating for a leader who avoids trivial commentary and engages meaningfully with the public without over-relying on media. "Portugal needs a President who doesn't confine themselves to Belém Palace," Rio stated, calling for a figure who can safeguard democratic institutions and mediate between powers effectively.
Describing Gouveia e Melo as a candidate "transversal to all society" and free from partisan interests, Rio also touched on his longstanding advocacy for Justice reform, criticizing the system's abuses and interferences in political operations.
Rio's backing positions him as the highest-ranking former PSD official to diverge from the party's support for another ex-leader, Luís Marques Mendes, marking a significant moment in the presidential race.
