Summary:

  • Six neo-Nazis arrested, including a PSP chief, for suspected terrorist activities and hate crimes

  • First-ever seizure of 3D-printed weapons in Portugal, fully functional and ready to use

  • Group aimed to form a political movement backed by an armed militia, with evidence of training and recruitment

  • Flags and stickers of neo-Nazi group 1143 found among seized items

  • PJ warns of rising hate crimes, fueled by online recruitment and fake news

The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested six individuals on Tuesday, June 17, linked to the far-right and neo-Nazi group Movimento Armilar Lusitano, suspected of terrorist activities, discrimination, and incitement to hatred and violence. This group was described as aiming to establish itself as a political movement supported by an armed militia.

In a groundbreaking discovery for Portugal, weapons designed and produced using 3D printing technology were seized during the operation. These weapons were fully functional and ready to fire, marking a first in the country. The operation also uncovered explosives, bladed weapons, and firearms.

Among those detained is a PSP officer currently in a leadership position at the Lisbon Municipal Police. The group, primarily composed of Portuguese men, included members from various security forces. Investigations revealed their activities on Telegram channels with over 900 members, sharing messages with other far-right groups.

The PJ highlighted the group's efforts to arm themselves, recruit members, and conduct tactical training, though the specific nature of their planned actions remains unclear. Flags and stickers associated with the neo-Nazi group 1143, led by Mário Machado, were also found.

Luís Neves, the national director of the PJ, expressed concern over the rise in hate crimes, fueled by fake news and online recruitment targeting younger demographics. The involvement of a PSP officer in the group was confirmed, though the integrity of the security forces was not questioned.

The operation, dubbed "Operação Desarme 3D", involved 15 search warrants and resulted in the seizure of various items, including ammunition, IT equipment, and other evidence. The group's origins trace back to 2018, with activity intensifying during the pandemic. Their ideology promotes ethnic nationalism and opposes democratic institutions.

The detainees are set to face their first judicial interrogation to determine coercive measures. This case has prompted a review of legislation to address new challenges posed by such groups.
