Summary:

  • Avenida Almirante Reis to undergo major transformation by 2029

  • Increased greenery with more trees and green spaces

  • Safer bike lanes to be introduced, segregated from traffic

  • Traffic adjustments to enhance flow and accessibility

  • Project costs estimated at €20 million with extensive public participation

A New Vision for Avenida Almirante Reis

The Avenida Almirante Reis is set for a major transformation that will incorporate more trees, bike lanes, and eliminate the central divider. This ambitious project, announced by Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas, is a result of extensive public participation and aims to create a greener, more pedestrian-friendly environment without radical changes.

Project Overview

By the end of 2028 or early 2029, the nearly three-kilometer stretch from Martim Moniz to Alameda will feature:

  • Wider pedestrian areas
  • Safer, segregated bike lanes
  • An increase in green spaces and trees, boosting the number from 295 to 370
  • A 25% increase in cycling paths
  • A doubling of public lighting, from 230 to 460 lamps

Traffic Changes

The traffic flow will be adjusted to improve conditions:

  • Cars will have two lanes from Martim Moniz to Praça do Chile, and one lane in the opposite direction.
  • From Alameda to Areeiro, there will be two lanes in each direction.
  • The existing central divider and current bike lane will be removed to facilitate these changes.

Budget and Timeline

The project is estimated to cost over €20 million and is part of the largest public consultation ever conducted in Lisbon, which gathered around 2,500 contributions from citizens and organizations. Work is expected to begin in 2027, with efforts to potentially start as early as 2026.

Community Input and Urban Planning

The comprehensive community consultation has shaped the plans to ensure that the avenue remains functional for vehicles while enhancing the urban landscape. The aim is to create a pleasant environment that encourages walking and biking, reflecting the needs and desires of those who live and work in the area.

Conclusion

The Avenida Almirante Reis will not only be revitalized but will also serve as a model for urban mobility, integrating with future plans for the Baixa and Chiado areas. The project is a significant step towards a greener, more accessible Lisbon, balancing the needs of motorists and pedestrians alike.
