New €20 Railway Pass Launches Today
The €20 monthly railway pass for residents in Portugal comes into effect today, offering access to various CP Intercidades services (2nd class), as well as Regional, InterRegional (2nd class), and urban trains in Coimbra, Lisbon, and Porto outside their metropolitan areas.
Key Features of the Pass
- Advance Reservations Required: Users must reserve their seats on Intercidades trains up to 24 hours in advance at CP ticket offices or automatic machines in Lisbon.
- Free Reservations: Pass holders can reserve seats for up to two distinct journeys per day without additional charges.
- Exclusions: The pass is not valid for Alfa Pendular and International Celta services, nor for 1st class on Intercidades and InterRegional trains.
Coverage and Pricing
The new pass allows unlimited travel on all urban trains in Coimbra, while in Lisbon and Porto, it is valid only outside their metropolitan areas. According to the government, around 29.9 million passengers are expected to benefit from this new pass.
- The €20 pass covers 30 consecutive days of travel, with options for 60 days at €40 and 90 days at €60. It is loaded onto the CP Card, which costs €6 (€3 for students).
Financial Support for CP
The Minister of Infrastructure has assured that there will be financial compensation for CP due to this railway pass, amounting to €18.9 million annually through a public service contract with the state.
Currently, a standard one-way ticket on the Intercidades service from Lisbon to Porto in 2nd class costs €26.85, making the new pass a cost-effective option for frequent travelers.
