Albufeira's New Initiative to Enhance Water Safety for Children
The municipality of Albufeira has introduced the 'Albufeira a Nadar' project for the 2025/2026 school year, targeting all students in the 3rd and 4th grades of the first cycle in the municipality's school groups.
Originally started in 2016 by Futebol Clube Ferreiras, the project has expanded significantly. This year, with the inclusion of all three school groups, the number of participants is set to increase from about 400 to 1,200 children.
The primary goal is to develop basic adaptation and safety skills in aquatic environments, with a special focus on preventing child drowning. Additionally, the program promotes healthy lifestyle habits, boosts children's confidence in water settings, and enhances various psychosocial skills.
Socially, the project is highly impactful, offering free access to eight swimming lessons in a controlled and safe aquatic environment for all participants.
José Carlos Rolo, President of the Albufeira Municipal Council, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating it provides children with essential water abilities that contribute to their overall safety.
The activities will take place throughout the 2025/2026 school year at the Municipal Pools, under the expert guidance of technicians from the Division of Sports and Youth.
