Three beaches in the Algarve—Praia Verde, Praia de Altura, and Praia do Verdelago—have been closed to swimmers following the detection of E. coli bacteria in the water. A red flag was raised at noon on Tuesday, signaling the prohibition of bathing activities.
Authorities are yet to determine the source of the contamination, with preliminary investigations not conclusively linking it to sewage systems. Afonso Martins, commander of the Vila Real de Santo António Maritime Authority, mentioned that the contamination was identified during routine water quality tests conducted throughout the bathing season.
This incident follows a similar occurrence in Nazaré, where 116 people exhibited symptoms of contamination after exposure to polluted beach water over the weekend. The situation has prompted calls for enhanced monitoring of water quality at popular swimming spots to prevent future health risks.
