The Minister of Environment has announced inspections at Monte Gordo and Praia Verde beaches in the Algarve, marking the beginning of a series of checks aimed at ensuring public access to coastal areas. Local authorities were not forewarned about these inspections, sparking a mix of surprise and reassurance from municipal leaders.
Álvaro Araújo, representing Vila Real de Santo António, emphasized that all beaches within the municipality remain publicly accessible. Echoing this sentiment, Filomena Sintra, Mayor of Castro Marim, firmly stated, "We are not Comporta," referencing the controversial privatization of beach accesses elsewhere in Portugal. The mayor highlighted ongoing developments, including the VerdeLago project, which features a hotel and apartments. Despite some traditional beach access paths being blocked due to construction, Sintra assured that a boardwalk is being extended to connect all beaches in Castro Marim, ensuring uninterrupted public access.
The mayor also addressed concerns about restricted access in one of the VerdeLago lots, clarifying that while certain areas might have limited entry, the beaches themselves remain open to everyone. She reiterated that parking near these beaches is free, further facilitating public enjoyment of the Algarve's stunning coastline.
