Algarve's tourism sector experienced a significant boost in April, driven by the Easter holidays and increased international demand. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), accommodation establishments in the region welcomed approximately 492,000 guests, marking a 10.1% increase compared to April 2024.
International visitors led the growth with a 10.6% rise, while domestic tourists increased by 8.6%. From January to April, the total number of guests in the Algarve grew by 2.7%.
Overnight stays also saw a positive trend, totaling 1.86 million in April — an 11.3% increase from the previous year. Resident overnight stays rose by 11.6%, and non-resident stays by 11.2%. Since the beginning of the year, the Algarve has seen a 0.9% growth in this indicator.
Economically, the results were equally impressive. The total revenue of the tourism sector in the region reached 129 million euros in April, reflecting a 16.1% increase compared to 2024. The cumulative increase from January to April stands at 4.7%.
The average stay duration stood out at 3.77 nights per tourist in April, significantly above the national average of 2.50 nights.
Among Algarve municipalities, Albufeira remained the top destination, with 678,000 overnight stays and an overall growth of 4.8%, driven by a 7.6% increase in non-resident stays. Other municipalities also recorded significant growth, including Portimão (+26.2%), Lagoa (+15.7%), Lagos (+15.5%), and Loulé (+8.7%).
Faro International Airport also reported strong performance, with 1 million passengers in April — a 13.6% increase from the same month last year. The year-to-date growth is 8.1%.
André Gomes, President of Algarve Tourism, stated, "These results not only reinforce the Algarve's position as an excellent tourist destination but also highlight our ability to adapt and remain resilient in an extremely competitive international context." He added, "The significant growth in key indicators, such as guests, overnight stays, and revenues, along with the increase in air traffic, demonstrates the effectiveness of regional strategies to promote and diversify the tourism offer."
