The Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) has made headlines by achieving a remarkable 42.3% energy saving in its headquarters building in Faro during 2024. This significant reduction was accomplished through the installation of a photovoltaic energy system, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (PRR).
Key Achievements:
- Surpassed energy efficiency targets set for the 2022/2024 period.
- Installed a solar photovoltaic system with storage for self-consumption, connected to the low-voltage network.
- Battery storage allows for the decoupling of energy production and consumption times.
Environmental Impact:
- Reduced dependency on the electrical grid.
- Enhanced use of locally produced renewable energy.
- Avoided the emission of approximately 15 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The CCDR's headquarters saw its energy classification jump from level B to A+, a testament to the effectiveness of the measures implemented. Before the intervention, the building consumed 109,297 kWh annually from the grid, a figure that dropped to 63,061 kWh in 2024.
Future Plans:
The CCDR is not stopping here. Preparatory work is underway for similar interventions at the CEAT — Tavira Agricultural Experimentation Center and the São Francisco Building in Faro. Additionally, works are set to begin soon at the Doglioni Building, also in Faro, further extending the benefits of energy efficiency.
These initiatives are part of a broader project co-financed by the PRR, through the Environmental Fund, under the investment TC-C13-i02 — Energy Efficiency in Central Public Administration Buildings, with support from the European Union — NextGenerationEU.
