Looking for a serene getaway in the Algarve's eastern region? This area is known for its warm days and nights, sea temperatures easily reaching 25°C, and a deep connection to Portuguese traditions. Here, the streets haven't been taken over by pubs, and the stars of the show remain the local seafood and the distinctive aroma of fishing boats.
August sees a mass migration from Lisbon and other major cities to the south, filling almost every beach – even the quieter ones. But there are exceptions. Barra Nova Beach, on Fuseta Island, is one of them. Close to Olhão, and just a short distance from Faro or Tavira, it's a spot that deserves a dedicated day in your vacation plans.
Getting there is straightforward, but there are key points to note: the beach lacks any infrastructure – no cafes, toilets, or beach support. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and food to make the most of your time. Pro tip: check the tide table and aim to visit as the tide is going out. The experience is significantly better at low tide.
Start your journey in Fuseta village. Whether by car or public transport, you'll quickly find the departure point for boats – both scheduled services and water taxis. On the village side, there's also a calm beach on the Ria Formosa, popular in summer. Save this for your return, especially if you're craving a cold drink or a meal with a view.
At the water taxi ticket offices, ask for Barra Nova Beach. The trips are quick – about 10 to 15 minutes – with multiple departures daily. If you prefer a guaranteed return, you can arrange it in advance: there's mobile and internet coverage on the island.
Upon arrival, the charm is undeniable. Crystal-clear water, fine white sand stretching as far as the eye can see, and vast sandbanks intersected by the sea. The water temperature is a pleasant surprise, having exceeded 25°C in 2024. But beware – it's a wild, unguarded beach. Avoid deep areas and enjoy this little paradise responsibly.
Back in Fuseta, unwind at a terrace overlooking the Ria Formosa or end your day with an unforgettable sunset at Fuseta-Ria beach.
