Mainland Portugal is currently enduring a severe heatwave, part of a broader extreme weather event affecting western Europe. Temperatures have soared to 42 degrees Celsius in some areas, including the Iberian peninsula, Greece, and France.
This intense heat has triggered unstable weather phenomena across Portugal, such as unexpected rain showers, violent thunderstorms, and hail, particularly in the country's interior.
Rolling Cloud Phenomenon Captivates Beachgoers
On Sunday, beachgoers along the Portuguese coast were treated to a rare sight: a roll cloud emerging from the ocean and moving towards the shore. This tube-shaped cloud, formed by the interaction of contrasting air masses and sea breezes, created a stunning visual as it rolled horizontally across the sky. Despite its dramatic appearance, the roll cloud is harmless, unlike tsunamis it's often mistaken for.
The phenomenon was captured and widely shared on social media, drawing attention to the unique meteorological event. Accompanying the cloud, strong winds surprised many, adding to the day's unusual weather.
Rising Temperatures Spark Forest Fire Concerns
With temperatures expected to climb further, fears of forest fires are mounting. The National Civil Protection Authority has issued warnings, highlighting a Very High to Maximum fire risk in the North, Centre interiors, and the Algarve. Preventative measures and recommendations have been shared to mitigate potential disasters.
