Between 2019 and 2023, extremist movements challenging fundamental rights, particularly those related to abortion, gender equality, and LGBTQI+ rights, received over 3.3 million euros (more than 3.9 million dollars) in Portugal. This figure is a drop in the ocean compared to the one billion euros (1.18 billion dollars) identified for the same purpose across Europe during the same period, placing Portugal in the 17th position in a European Union ranking led by Hungary, where funding exceeded 147 million euros (over 172 million dollars).
A recent report warns that "decades of sexual and reproductive rights" are under threat, highlighting the significant financial backing these movements have received. The situation in Portugal reflects a broader European trend where rights and freedoms are increasingly contested by well-funded groups.
