André Ventura, leader of the Chega party, was met with violent protests during his visit to Braga, where members of the Roma community expressed their discontent through insults and even throwing pyrotechnic devices. This incident marks the second consecutive day of clashes between the Roma community and Chega's campaign team.
Confrontations Escalate
The protestors, numbering around twenty, hurled accusations of racism and pedophilia at Ventura, referencing recent controversies involving party members. Ventura retaliated, urging the protestors to "go work", which only fueled the confrontation further. One protester voiced concerns over the escalating racial tensions, warning of potential civil war if the hatred continues.
Ventura's Response
Ventura speculated on the organization behind the protests, questioning whether it was the Roma community itself or left-wing parties. He concluded his speech in Praça Conde de Agrolongo by leading his supporters in chanting "we are not afraid", amidst a crowd of about two hundred militants.
Political Criticisms
During his address, Ventura criticized opposing parties, blaming 50 years of governments for the current state of affairs. Filipe Melo, Chega's lead candidate for Braga, attempted to engage with the Roma group but was rebuffed with shouts of "fascist", a common accusation against the party.
