The MURO_LX — Lisbon Urban Art Festival is back for its 6th edition this month, featuring a water-themed program that includes exhibitions, talks, cinema, guided tours, and artistic interventions across the city.
Organized by the Lisbon City Council through the Urban Art Gallery, this year's festival will focus on neighborhoods surrounding the Aqueduto das Águas Livres — Bairro da Bela Flor and Bairro da Liberdade — and structures marking the past and present of water in the capital, such as the Water Museum and the Water Factory.
The program, unveiled at the Water Factory, showcases works by national and international artists, both Lisbon residents and visitors. It spans exhibitions, discussions, animation, cinema, workshops, guided tours, and a special Mini MURO event on World Children's Day, June 1.
Highlights include the opening of the exhibition Marginalis by João Murta on May 23, where visitors are placed 'on the margin,' reflecting on political, social, and environmental issues. The Water Factory will also screen Bomb it, a 2007 documentary on graffiti and urban art.
Other exhibitions feature Teresa Calado's Da nossa costa, illustrating Portuguese maritime fish varieties, and Gilberto Gaspar's Há art no esgoto, transforming sewer lids into art. The festival also includes skateboard art from the Juntas Hacemos Más international female graffiti festival.
Guided tours of the exhibitions are available throughout the festival, running until May 31. For the full program, visit the festival's website.
Since its 2016 debut in Carnide, MURO_LX has celebrated urban art in various Lisbon neighborhoods, featuring artists like Brazil's Kobra, Britain's D*Face, and Portugal's Bordalo II.
