Nearly 60 restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets in Lisbon, located around Marquês de Pombal and Parque Eduardo VII, must close by 5:00 PM on Saturday. This decision comes in response to potential celebrations for the football championship, as per a municipal order.
According to the document, dated Wednesday and shared by Lisbon's City Council with Lusa, the request was made by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police to restrict the operating hours of various commercial establishments across more than a dozen streets in the capital.
For safety reasons, the order specifies that from 5:00 PM on May 10, 2025, the listed establishments within the security perimeter must cease operations. The directive was issued by councilors responsible for Sports, Security, and Municipal Police, Rui Cordeiro, and Public Space, Diogo Moura.
The affected areas include Praça Marquês de Pombal, Parque Eduardo VII, and several avenues and streets such as Avenida da Liberdade, Duque de Loulé, and Fontes Pereira de Melo, among others.
A municipal source told Lusa that the council is in touch with sector representatives and merchants to raise awareness about the PSP's request.
The Portuguese football title could be decided this Saturday during the Lisbon derby between Benfica and Sporting, starting at 6:00 PM at Estádio da Luz. Traditionally, fans from both clubs gather at Marquês de Pombal and surrounding areas to celebrate championship victories.
