A local man was detained by the GNR during firefighting operations in the Alvão mountains, where two active fronts continue to burn with low intensity. The individual was allegedly attempting to create a 'counterfire,' a method authorities warn against due to its potential to exacerbate the situation.
The incident occurred amidst ongoing efforts to control a wildfire that reignited twice after initially being declared under control. The fire, which started on August 2 in Sirarelhos, Vila Real, has affected nearly thirty villages, reaching the Samardã area and threatening others like Testeira, Paredes, and Benagouro.
David Lobato, the Sub-regional Commander of Médio Tejo, emphasized the dangers of unauthorized firefighting methods, stating that such actions not only fail to resolve the situation but also endanger both the operational teams and the public. He urged the community to refrain from using fire, highlighting its legal prohibition unless conducted by specialized personnel.
The terrain's challenging accessibility has complicated firefighting efforts, with much of the work requiring on-foot maneuvers and light combat vehicles, as heavier equipment cannot reach certain areas. Currently, 101 vehicles and 320 operational personnel are deployed to combat the blaze, supported by a heavy helicopter for consolidation efforts.
The commander described the night as one of intense work, with similar efforts expected throughout the day. Despite the challenges, operations are proceeding favorably, with the fire's two active fronts burning at low intensity.
