The Brazilian Consulate in Lisbon has issued a warning to Brazilian citizens planning to travel to Portugal, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the country's tourism and immigration regulations.
According to a statement released on the consulate's Instagram account, travelers must present all necessary documentation upon arrival in Portugal. This includes a valid passport, visas, proof of accommodation, and a return flight ticket.
The consulate also highlighted the need for those who have expressed interest in immigrating to contact Portuguese authorities beforehand. "If in doubt, and especially if you've shown interest in immigrating, consult the relevant Portuguese authorities before traveling," the note advised.
This alert comes in the wake of Portugal's new foreigner law, enacted in July, which changes the entry rules for Lusophone citizens. They now require a work or residence visa obtained in their home country before applying for residency in Portugal.
Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, who currently can enter as tourists without a visa and then apply for residency, will be affected by this change. The Brazilian government has expressed "great concern" over the new law, though Portuguese officials assure it is not targeted against Brazilian immigrants.
Emídio Sousa, Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, clarified during a visit to Brazil that the law aims to regulate the influx of immigrants, which has been uncontrolled in recent years, to the detriment of both newcomers and residents.
If the law is enacted, all citizens of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) wishing to apply for residency in Portugal will need a specific visa, to be obtained from Portuguese consulates in their home countries.
