Emigrant votes are painting a new picture for Portugal's political scene, with Chega taking the lead in the European circle and the AD (Democratic Alliance) ahead outside Europe. With at least 151,000 emigrant votes still to be counted, the preliminary results suggest the PS (Socialist Party) might secure third place in the last two electoral circles to be decided.
André Wemans, spokesperson for the National Election Commission, shared with CM that 196,000 votes were counted yesterday, and an additional 151,000 are expected by 5 PM today, excluding those arriving by mail. Vote nullification rates are notably high in some areas, with over half the votes from a Canadian polling station being discarded due to lack of photocopied identification documents.
While the first day's votes haven't been fully aggregated, CMTV's estimates show the AD leading outside Europe by over 7,000 votes, with Chega close behind at around 6,000, and the PS trailing with approximately 4,500 votes. In the European circle, Chega surged to about 35,000 votes, nearing last year's total, while the AD and PS garnered 17,000 and 15,000 votes, respectively.
