If you're passionate about handicrafts, you won't want to miss the new initiative by the Madeira Tourist Office. This space in Chiado, Lisbon, will host the Madeira Handicraft Fair to celebrate and showcase the most traditional aspects of the island.
On May 23 (Friday, from 4 PM to 8 PM) and May 24 (Saturday, from 3 PM to 7 PM), you can experience the iconic and welcoming atmosphere of the traditional stalls of Avenida Arriaga, in Funchal, without leaving Lisbon.
Over these two days, the Madeira Tourist Office will transform into a vibrant market, with sales stands displaying unique handmade pieces. You'll find authentic items made from banana fiber, wicker pieces, traditional Madeiran musical instruments – such as the braguinha and the brinquinho – as well as Madeira embroidery. Live, an embroiderer will demonstrate this meticulous art in action.
These ancestral crafts, born from the manual art of artisans, have existed on the island since the first centuries of its settlement. They emerged from the need to create essential goods and domestic utensils. We're talking about a family knowledge, passed down from generation to generation.
The best part? You can take your favorite items home, making it even more special, with memories of this unique archipelago. Although stock is limited, you can always order a specific product that has won you over.
This is one of several initiatives promoted by the Madeira Tourist Office in Lisbon, which continues to bring a bit of the island to the capital. Mark your calendar so you don't miss this opportunity.
The Madeira Tourist Office is located at Rua Nova do Almada, nº 55 and 57, 1200-288 Chiado.
