Mariana Mortágua, leader of the Left Bloc (BE), has openly described the party's performance in the recent legislative elections as "a major defeat". This comes as the BE secured only one deputy, Mortágua herself, a stark contrast to the five deputies elected in the previous elections.
"It's important to acknowledge this defeat with all humility," Mortágua stated during her address to the media. She emphasized the need for reflection and learning from the electoral outcomes and the campaign they conducted.
The BE leader highlighted the challenges of a "difficult campaign" amidst a noticeable rightward shift in Europe and globally. She also warned against the rise of the far-right, which she said spreads an "ideology of fear and hate".
Despite the setbacks, Mortágua praised the campaign for mobilizing a significant number of people and for being one that the party could be proud of. She stressed the importance of rebuilding the party for the future, aiming to align it with their vision moving forward.
