In 2023, Portugal's safe vehicle fleet reached 8.7 million units, according to data from Marktest and the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF). This figure marks a 2.9% increase from the previous year and is over 70% higher than two decades ago.
Breakdown of Safe Vehicles
The majority of the safe vehicles are light vehicles (82.0%), followed by motorcycles (6.4%) and agricultural vehicles (4.2%). Other types like mopeds, heavy vehicles, and others represent smaller percentages.
Top Cities for Safe Vehicles
When analyzing by municipality, Lisbon leads with approximately 410,000 safe vehicles, accounting for 4.7% of the total. This is followed by Sintra (3.0%), and then Vila Nova de Gaia, Oeiras, Loures, Cascais, Braga, Porto, and Leiria, each with 2%. Together, these nine municipalities hold over 21% of the safe vehicle fleet in Portugal.
