Montenegro's Diplomatic Mission in China
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has embarked on an official visit to China, where he made a significant appeal to President Xi Jinping regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a meeting at the Forbidden City, Montenegro emphasized China's crucial role due to its close ties with Russia, urging for contributions towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Confidence in China's Response
Montenegro expressed optimism that his plea would not fall on deaf ears. He stated, "I believe that this appeal, coming from a friendly country, from a member of the European Union, and from a nation with shared values and history as highlighted by President Xi, will not be ignored." While he acknowledged that he cannot speak for the Chinese leader, Montenegro conveyed strong confidence in Portugal's diplomatic efforts.
Portugal's Role in Global Peace
Highlighting Portugal's international standing, the Prime Minister underscored the country's commitment to peace and bridge-building. "At our scale and without any pretension, we do what is expected of a nation with Portugal's history and international respectability. We are builders of bridges, promoters of people's rapprochement, defenders of peace, values, and respect for human rights," he affirmed.
This visit marks a pivotal moment in Portugal-China relations, with potential implications for global diplomacy and the resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
