A recent study highlights a concerning trend for healthcare professionals in Portugal.
According to research by economist Eugénio Rosa, doctors and nurses are experiencing a significant loss in purchasing power, with their salaries increasingly aligning with the National Minimum Wage (SMN). The study, covering the period from 2012 to 2025, reveals a stark decline in how much these professionals earn compared to the SMN.
In 2012, the average gross salary for doctors was 3,276 euros, which was 6.8 times the minimum wage. However, the gap has been narrowing over the years, raising alarms about the financial well-being of those at the forefront of Portugal's healthcare system.
This development poses serious questions about the sustainability of careers in healthcare and the potential impact on the quality of medical services in the country.
